Daycare worker under investigation after baby suffers broken arm, skull fracture

MANSFIELD, Ohio — A daycare is under investigation after an 11-month-old suffered a broken arm, skull fracture, and bleeding on the brain. A criminal report has now been filed against Step by Step daycare in Mansfield.

The family's attorney says the little girl, named Anastasia, is currently at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Her mom tells ABC 6/FOX 28 the 11-month-old underwent an MRI Friday to check for any brain injuries.

According to their attorney, the mom got a call Monday from an employee who told her Anastasia toppled over while sitting down and hit her head, which caused bruising. The mother noticed a big goose egg on her forehead and said when she took her home, her daughter wasn't acting right.

The mom says she took her daughter to the doctor Tuesday and was told she was fine. That's when she decided to go back to the daycare and ask to see the incident report and video from surveillance cameras inside. She says on the video, she saw an employee toss her daughter, who then landed on her head.

The Richland County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case as child endangerment, but no charges have been filed yet.

The Department of Job and Family Services is also investigating claims of abuse at Step by Step that would impact the center's license.

In a statement released to ABC 6/Fox 28, the center said: "The management and staff of Step-By-Step Child Care are deeply concerned for the welfare of Anastasia Salyers and her family. We have and will continue to cooperate in the investigation into the incident reported in the media earlier today. Step-By-Step Child Care has taken all available measures to ensure the continued safety of all the children whose care has been entrusted to us and whose safety continues to be our number one priority. Due to the sensitive and important nature of the ongoing investigation, Step-By-Step Child Care personnel will not be able to comment upon any of the details of the incident. Our facility remains open and we will continue to provide the high-quality childcare services our parents expect."
