Michael J Fox goes Back to the Future – with a little help from Coldplay

Coldplay livened up their set at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday night by bringing actor Michael J Fox on stage and (sort-of) recreating a scene from Back to The Future.

In the 1985 film, Fox’s character Marty McFly travels back in time to the Fifties and helps perform the song Earth Angel (a real hit from 1954) at a school dance – while his parents fall in love on the dance floor in front of him, ensuring Marty’s future birth and existence.

He then follows it up by playing and singing Johnny B. Goode, a 1958 rock and roll number by Chuck Berry – but finds out that the 1955 crowd aren’t quite ready for his metal-inspired improvisations.
On Sunday, Coldplay’s Chris Martin showed his audience a video link to his son Moses, who asked his dad to “play a song from both of our favourite movie, Back to the Future”.
The band then launched into a performance of Earth Angel –with 55-year-old Fox emerging on-stage and joining them for a guitar solo halfway through, before following up with a rendition of Johnny B. Goode.

But despite his evident musical prowess, the actor actually mimed both the guitar playing and the singing in Back to the Future.

Diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1991 at the age of 29, he established the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research in 2000 and has spoken publicly about his ongoing battle with the disease, which he manages with medication.

The actor revealed in 2015 that when he was first diagnosed, he was told he would be able to work for another decade at most.

"It was pretty scary. I was 29 years old and so it was the last thing I expected to hear," he told host David Letterman during an episode of The Late Show with David Letterman.

"I thought I'd hurt my shoulder doing some stunt because I had a twitch in my pinkie. And the doctor said 'You have Parkinson's disease.' He said, 'The good news is that you have 10 years of work left'."

"That was 22 years ago and I’m still working."
