Why The Best Shave of Your Life is Right Around the Corner
Finding the perfect razor or shaving cream, or getting your shaving routine down to science, is a small but deeply satisfying victory not unlike finding the perfect cotton T-shirt. Turning a monotonous activity into a daily indulgence is the ultimate win. Luckily, the competition between shaving startups continues to heat up, meaning, when it comes to your face, the best shave of your life is within even closer reach. Here's what went down between these brands just this week.
Unilever bought Dollar Shave Club for a ton of money.
This week Unilever, the fourth largest consumer goods company in the world, bought Dollar Shave Club for a billion dollars in cash. Under the multinational's control it would be reasonable to assume that DSC will continue to expand its product range and also possibly move into retail stores, as it currently only sells direct-to-consumer.
Harry's improved its razors without raising prices.
Harry’s, the other major razor-subscription startup, made a big quality play this week launching a second generation of razor blade cartridges and handles based on customer feedback. The blades now have a special trimmer on top for detailed shaving, while the handles feature grip material that makes it easier to maintain control with wet hands. Even better: Prices will remain the same.
Bevel and Gillette duel it out over who offers the best shave.
Shaving startup Bevel and Proctor & Gamble’s Gillette had it out in front of the National Advertising Division this week over Bevel’s claims that its single-blade razors were "clinically proven" or "dermatologist recommended" to get a better shave than that of a multi-blade razor. The NAD determined that Bevel could claim that its razors are effective in reducing ingrown hairs, bumps, and irritation, but that it had to drop the “clinically proven” bit.
